Acupuncture for Athletes

All athletes and coaches are involved in a constant search for ways to improve performance and gain a competitive edge over their rivals. Many are finding that acupuncture can often provide that edge.

By following the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), an acupuncture treatment can strengthen body function and restore internal harmony and balance. Professional sports teams and top athletes regularly have an acupuncturist on staff to treat injuries and to keep them performing at their peak.

Some of the best Olympic athletes are incorporating acupuncture into their wellness programs. China's most popular sportsman, the 7 foot 6 inch China basketball center, Yao Ming, used acupuncture to help him recover after undergoing surgery on his ankle in April, 2007.

Chinese swimmer, Wang Qun, was photographed doing some last minute training in Beijing with round marks on her back from an acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine treatment. The marks on the swimmers back were caused by cupping. Cupping is a technique in which a glass cup or bamboo jar is suctioned onto the body. It is used to relieve muscle pain, especially back pain from stiffness or injury; and to clear congestion in the chest, which can occur with common colds and influenza.

Acupuncture is well known for its effectiveness in reducing almost all types of pain, including sports-related injuries.

Acupuncture can be used to help decrease swelling, spasms and inflammation. Additionally, it can be used to control pain, increase range of motion and help promote healing. Because of its broad range of applications, acupuncture can be used during any of the phases of injury. The focus is not only to treat the injury but also to treat any underlying conditions that may predispose an individual to injuries. This is especially important when treating chronic or recurrent injuries that interfere with life activities or athletic performance.

Injuries occurring from sports are mostly due to trauma or overuse syndromes involving the musculoskeletal system and its soft tissues. Trauma to these soft tissues, including ligaments, tendons and muscles are generally the result from falls, blows, sprains/strains, collisions, compressions crushing and disruptions of the healing processes due to inflammation.

Some Commonly Treated Sports Injuries:

·                 Muscle Pull
·                 Neck Pain
·                 Shoulder Impingement
·                 Tennis Elbow
·                 Lower Back Strain
·                 Groin Pull
·                 Hamstring Strain
·                 Runner's Knee
·                 Shin Splints
·                 Ankle Sprain
·                 Achilles Tendonitis
·                 Arch Pain

Natural Cure for Insomnia – Acupuncture Drugless Therapy

A getting good night’s rest is one of the best pieces of health advice you can follow. But what if sleeping well is a challenge for you? When insomnia persists more than one or two nights and becomes chronic insomnia, most people turn to the use of sleep aids such as Trazadone or Ambien. While these pharmaceuticals can be effective for insomnia, they often develop into dependencies and can cause unwanted side-effects. Fortunately, chronic insomnia can be treated effectively with acupuncture! Acupuncture is a side-effect free, non-dependent, natural cure for insomnia!

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Oriental Medicine treatment where needles are inserted into meridians on the body. The principle of acupuncture treatment is to adjust the flow of Qi, or energy, in these acupuncture meridians which can control aspects of our body’s functioning. Acupuncture is especially effective for insomnia, as it has a calming effect on our nervous system.

Why Can’t I Sleep Well?

There are many possible causes for your insomnia. The physiology of insomnia according to Oriental Medicine can be complex, but the simplest explanation is that good sleep requires two factors: proper transition of Yang and Yin energy with the change from day to night, and proper functioning of your blood to house your Spirit.
The Yang energy circulates through the Yang areas of your body during the day keeping your mind active. At night, this Yang energy should return to the Yin areas of your body, deeper and lower in your body. If the Yang energy stays in the Yang areas of your brain and eyes, these parts will continue to be energized and prevent you from falling asleep leading to insomnia.
In Chinese Acupuncture physiology, your Blood is the residence of the Spirit, or Shen. If the Blood cannot support the Shen at night, the Shen wanders upwards in your mind causing insomnia. The Blood is produced by the Spleen and stored by the Liver. If either of these organs is in disharmony, the quality of the Blood will be weak, and unable to house the Shen.

How Can Acupuncture Help Insomnia?

Let’s first look at the possible types of insomnia treated by acupuncture, and understand why they occur. Knowing what type of insomnia you are experiencing can help your Acupuncturist provide the most effective treatment for you.
·                                 I have difficultly falling asleep: The Yang Qi cannot enter the Yin areas of the body leading to insomnia.
·                                 I wake up often during the night: Internal heat is stuck in the body causing insomnia.
·                                 I wake up early and can’t go back to sleep: Poor lifestyle may have damaged your Kidney Yin energy. Heat from Kidney Deficiency is rising up causing insomnia.
·                                 I have excessive dreaming during sleep: The brain doesn’t quiet down and it is difficult to relax due to Liver deficiency Heat or Heart Fire causing insomnia.
·                                 I can’t sleep at all: Not enough Blood due to either Spleen or Liver deficiency causing insomnia.
When you receive an acupuncture treatment, your nervous system begins to calm down. The acupuncture needles are doing deep work by unraveling your subconscious stresses, balancing your Qi, and releasing the causes of your insomnia. You may even fall asleep on the treatment table.
You should sleep the best the first night after an acupuncture treatment; however, several days later symptoms of your insomnia may start to return. This is in indication that you should receive your acupuncture treatment for insomnia more frequently. It usually takes several acupuncture treatments per week, for several weeks to fully resolve chronic insomnia.

Cure Your Insomnia!

Insomnia is one of the top reasons people seek acupuncture. Often, patients come to an acupuncturist reporting insomnia because they are disconnected from other emotional issues they are facing. These repressed emotions can often surface as insomnia, anxiety, or mild depression. As the stresses of modern life take their toll, our minds can no longer relax and our sleep becomes disturbed.
If you are experiencing insomnia, don’t face another sleepless night. Find an Acupuncturist near you to help conquer your insomnia!

'Cupping' Takes The Pain Away

Cupping is a form of alternative pain therapy

"There are two forms of cupping therapy,"  "Cupping therapy is a treatment in which the practitioner creates suction in a cup. And then applies that cup to the body, which then draws the skin up around the cup, under the cup."

The traditional method uses fire , in this method we hold a cotton ball and wets it with alcohol. Then ignites the soaked cotton ball and places it in the cup.

"Fire cupping uses a flame to create suction in the cup – in this method you'll see a flame in the cup - and then, we'll apply the cup to the body."

The skin gets sucked up and rises under the cup as blood rushes up.

"Cupping brings fresh blood to the area ,  "So it tends to improve circulation. Most commonly, it's used for aches and pains of various types like cervical , knee pain , backache , cervical spondylosis etc.

"It feels a bit strange," the patient says ,  "Definitely doesn't hurt , it just feels like someone's pulling at your skin."

"Cupping therapy is usually used as part of acupuncture or body work treatment. It's been part of Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years. Originally, animal horn was the original cup. The horn method is the original thing. Later on brass, ceramic, bamboo cups were used."

It looks like something out of medieval alchemy ,  it is just an alternate method of treatment.

"Fire cupping is the traditional, most effective method. Some practitioners choose to use the suction cup method, where you pump up the suction cup and that's it. Same kind of thing - just doesn't use flame."

There are very few conditions in which cupping should not be used, such as high fever, skin disease or tendency to bleed easily.

Each cupping session last about 10 to 15 minutes and it can be repeated, once the marks are cleared, until the problem is resolved .

To get a treatment , seek a licensed acupuncturist.
